# Carrier details

> Send the carrier's name, phone, email and address on every claim. They print on the adjuster's forms.

The **carrier** is the insurance company on the claim. Only `carrier.name` is required, but the carrier's name, phone, email and address print on the forms the adjuster produces for the claim.

**Send all four on every claim.** A claim with only a carrier name is accepted, with no warning, and its forms may then lack the carrier's phone, email or address.

```json theme={"system"}
{
  "carrier": {
    "name": "Gulf Coast Mutual Insurance",
    "phone": "8005550199",
    "email": "claims@gulfcoastmutual.example.com",
      "street": "2100 Harbour Island Boulevard, Suite 300",
      "city": "Tampa",
      "state": "FL",
      "zip": "33602"
    }
  }
}
```

| Field | What to send |
| - | - |
| `carrier.name` | The carrier's name, up to 255 characters. Required. |
| `carrier.phone` | The carrier's claims phone number, up to 20 characters. US numbers are usually sent as 10 digits. |
| `carrier.email` | The carrier's claims email address, up to 255 characters. |
| `carrier.address` | The carrier's mailing address: `street` (up to 255 characters), `city` (up to 100 characters), `state` (the two-letter USPS code, such as `FL`) and `zip` (five digits, or ZIP+4 such as `33602-1234`). Send all four parts, or leave `address` out. |

## How OSA keeps carrier details

OSA keeps the details of each carrier your firm has sent, under the carrier's name, and uses them on the forms for your claims with that carrier.

* **The same name is recognised however it is typed.** Capital letters and extra spaces make no difference: `Gulf Coast Mutual Insurance` and `GULF COAST MUTUAL INSURANCE` are the same carrier, and so is either one typed with two spaces between words. Any other difference in the name, such as an abbreviation, makes it a different carrier.
* **What you send fills in what is missing.** If OSA has a carrier's name without a phone, and a later claim for that carrier includes one, the phone is added. The same goes for the email and the address. An address counts as one piece: it is added only when OSA has no address at all for that carrier.
* **Different details never change earlier claims.** If a claim names the same carrier with a phone, email or address that differs from what OSA already has, nothing OSA already has is overwritten. The new claim uses the details sent with it, and earlier claims keep theirs.

Details that say the same thing in a different form don't count as different. Phone numbers are compared by their digits, and a US number with its country code (`18005550199`) is the same as its 10-digit form. Emails are compared ignoring capital letters. Addresses are compared part by part, ignoring capital letters and extra spaces, and a ZIP+4 is the same as its five-digit ZIP.

Sending the full details on every claim is the simplest way to be sure each claim's forms carry them.

Test claims count too: carrier details are kept for your firm as a whole, not separately for test and live claims. See [Testing with test accounts](/testing#carrier-details-in-test-claims).

## Reading the carrier back

`GET /v1/claims/{id}` and `GET /v1/claims` return `carrier` exactly as you sent it on that claim. Details filled in from your other claims are not added to the response.
